The charter of the Municipality of Mason was first approved by voters at the regular municipal election on November 4, 1969. It can be amended only upon approval by the voters of the City of Mason. Several amendments have occurred since 1969.

The charter establishes guidelines for the city’s operations. It defines:

  • the powers granted to the city
  • the composition of Council and how members are elected thereto
  • the procedures for legislative action
  • the appointment of the city manager
  • city departments
  • city boards and commissions
  • how elections shall be held
  • how citizen petitions shall be handled
  • financial considerations
  • other general provisions
